Completion of Thesis Proposal

Each student will have a supervisor who will serve as a mentor and guide for their thesis proposal. The supervisor will work with the student to establish a thesis committee. The thesis proposal is submitted before the student starts working on the thesis and needs to be approved by the thesis committee. The student will submit a written proposal including the rationale and outline of the topic to be covered in the thesis with indication of the scope of the literature to be reviewed. The proposal should include a background rationale, research questions, proposed methodology and data analysis plan.

Thesis

Successful completion of a thesis which must be defended at an oral exam. The details of the thesis can be found in the MSc Thesis Guideline.

Time Limits

Full-time: 6 terms – 2 years from initial registration

Graduate Student FormsThis is the general form to submit a registration change request (ex. late enrolment, course withdrawal, etc.)
Program Extension Form Program completion is expected within the Time Limits to Program Completion as set out in the Graduate Calendar section 13. Extensions may be granted in extenuating circumstances to master’s and PhD students upon request, review, and approval. For more information, see the Extension Policy and Procedures.
Leave of Absence (LOA):A Leave of Absence (LOA) provides graduate students with the opportunity to temporarily suspend their academic studies due to personal, medical, professional, or other valid circumstances. Time spent on a leave is not included in the time period allotted for completion of the degree and program time limit will be adjusted accordingly. For more information, see the Leave of Absence Procedures.
Audit a CourseStudents may choose to audit a course with approval from the course instructor and the MSc Academic Director. Complete the form and obtain all signatures before submitting to the Graduate Administrator.
Directed Study: Supervisor Agreement FormWith the approval of the supervisor and the Academic Director, graduate students may choose to take a Directed Readings course with their supervisor. The form must be submitted and approved by the term deadline prior to work on project commencing. Students may complete up to 1.0 credit of Directed Readings.

Travel/Research BursaryStudents who have had their work accepted at a conference can apply for travel funds from Graduate Studies via Carleton CentralAwards and Financial Assistance Graduate Online Application Forms. Applications must be submitted at least one month prior to travel.
