Conference Travel Funding for Full-time MSc and PhD Students

This document outlines various sources of conference travel funding for full-time graduate students at the Sprott School of Business. Please check the requirements for each source of funding as they may not all be the same.

Carleton Graduate Studies

Students can apply for a travel bursary in Carleton Central.

Carleton University Graduate Student Association (GSA)

The GSA’s travel grant will award 50% of travel costs that are not covered by other sources, up to $200 per fiscal year. The next round of grants will re-open in mid-Winter. Keep checking https://gsacarleton.ca/travel-grant/

Sprott School of Business

If, after applying for the above, you require more funding, please let the Graduate Research Programs Administrator know via email. You should confirm that you have applied for grants/bursaries through FGPA and GSA and require more funding, and submit all documentation as listed above. Eligible students may be reimbursed up to $500 for domestic travel and $750 for international travel. Students must have full-time status and be presenting at the conference to be eligible for funding. The same criteria applying for FGPA’s travel bursary apply.

Alfred and Isabel Bader Student Travel Awards

Awarded annually to one or more undergraduate or graduate students in good academic standing who have demonstrated an interest in traveling away from Carleton University to present papers and posters, participate in an exchange, or pursue other research travel pertinent to their studies. The donor-funded awards open each year in September, and students apply directly in Carleton Central. Since the deadline to apply for this award is typically the end of September, you do not need to provide a letter demonstrating that your paper has been accepted. You are asked to provide a budget detailing your anticipated expenses should your paper be accepted.

Your Supervisor

If your supervisor has a SSHRC or other grant, they may have included money for grad student travel to present research at conferences in their application. You should ask them if they may be able to cover some of your expenses.

The Conference or Association sponsoring the Conference

Many scholarly associations provide travel grants to attendees, including grad students, to help them finance the cost of attendance. For example, the Association for Consumer Research offers a Conference Travel Grant for students. Check with your scholarly association to see if they do something similar.
