BIB Study Abroad Requirement
To satisfy the BIB Study Abroad Requirement, each BIB student must have, on their BIB audit, a minimum of 4.0 approved Carleton credits successfully completed during the year of study abroad (this includes BUSI 3700), with a minimum of 1.0 credit taught in the BIB language.
Students completing a pre-approved international internship term (minimum of 12 weeks), in addition to a study term abroad must have on their BIB audit a minimum of 2.0 approved Carleton credits successfully completed during their study term abroad (this includes BUSI 3700), with a minimum 0.5 credits taught in their BIB language.
Please note that the Carleton Registrar’s Office will register you in BUSI 3700 (0.5 credits).
Course Selection
Access your Academic Audit on Carleton Central so you can clearly see the outstanding Items on your Audit. Courses taken while abroad must be able to fit into the outstanding Items.
In addition to understanding your requirements, you can review the courses taken in the past by Carleton students who have studied at your host institution. You can access this information on the Course Equivalencies Database, located on the Registrar’s Office page on International Exchanges
The BIB Audit has Items designed to accommodate the large variety of courses that BIB students take abroad. Approved courses from abroad will be transferred to these Items.
Do NOT register for courses on exchange that are equivalent to BUSI 4709 and BUSI 4705 as these courses must be taken at Sprott. Additionally, ensure that you do not take courses that are similar in content or equivalent to courses that you have already completed.
Exchange Course Approval Process
You are required to complete the following five steps at the start of each study term abroad, to have your exchange courses evaluated and approved:
-
Log onto Carleton Central and submit the courses that you would like to take while on exchange for approval, under Student Online Applications, Outgoing International Exchange. Submit sufficient courses for approval to ensure that you have a big enough pool of courses to select from when completing your actual registration.
Note that if a course needs to be evaluated, you must include a course outline for the course – you may submit the previous year’s course outline if you are not able to get a current version.
If you complete a Summer Language course at your host institution prior to the start of your first formal study term abroad, you are required to submit this language course for approval along with your first semester courses on Carleton Central. Additionally, you are required to submit a scanned copy of your diploma or certificate showing completion to your Sprott Program Advisor at bib@sprott.carleton.ca
-
Check Carleton Central regularly to check the approval status of each course. Note that approvals may come in at different times.
-
Register for courses at your host institution following their registration process, instructions, and deadlines.
-
Following your formal registration, please log onto Carleton Central and confirm your registration by checking the Confirm Registration box next to each relevant course.
-
You must also confirm your course registration directly to Sprott by submitting the Exchange Course Approval Form to your Sprott Program Advisor by email at bib@sprott.carleton.ca. This form allows your advisor to work with the Registrar’s Office to get your Exchange courses reflected on your Academic Audit as Current on Exchange (CEX). Please submit this form even when your registered courses are still being evaluated under Step 2.
While you are abroad, you may book a virtual appointment on mySprott with your Sprott Program Advisor to discuss your exchange courses and your BIB program requirements. You can also reach your advisor by email at bib@sprott.carleton.ca
Transcripts from Exchange
Before departing, please make arrangements with your host institution to have your Transcript sent directly to Carleton, as indicated below. You are strongly advised to also make arrangements to have an original transcript sent to you at your home address in Canada.
Please have your transcript sent to:
Carleton University
1125 Colonel By Drive
Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6
Canada
Attn: Exchange Program Coordinator
International Student Services Office
128 University Centre
Tel: +1 (613) 520-2519
After your transcripts are received by Carleton, your approved and successfully-completed courses will be transferred by the Registrar’s Office as EXC (Exchange) credits onto your Carleton Audit. Failed courses will be transferred as UNS (Unsatisfactory).
If there are discrepancies between the Transcript and your Exchange Course Approval Form, the Transcript will be used as the official source for credit transfer.
Once your EXC courses are reflected in your audit, please revisit your program progression plans and schedule an appointment with your Advisor to review them based on your program goals.
