Carleton University Master of Business Administration (MBA) candidate William Roy-Rodriguez is on a journey to take a people approach to making an impact in climate change. After completing his undergraduate degree in Human Environmental and Sustainability Studies at Concordia University, William chose to continue his education while adjusting his focus to business with an interest in people-level change and the global impact that organizations can have on climate change. This made the MBA at Sprott the right fit for William, who is completing his program with a concentration in Management and Change and a specialization in Climate Change.
Growing up, William spent much time visiting his family in the Dominican Republic. It was there that William saw firsthand the environmental impact of global warming and climate change. Hurricanes were prevalent during his visits, and as the years went on, he noticed climate-linked events happening more frequently. This influenced William to find a way to make a difference.
While visiting the Dominican Republic at the age of 14, William recalls being there during a cyclone. Neighbours from the entire street came to his family home to wait out the large storm.
“I remember in the house hearing heavy rain the entire day. But then once the cyclone hit, I remember that sound and it was so loud I couldn’t hear anything inside of my own home,” recalled William.
After this, William became more aware of the devastation caused by severe weather events, and the impact of climate change on people around the world. He knew he wanted to do something about it.
William is using the knowledge he gained from his undergraduate degree in environmental studies to amplify what he is learning in his MBA as he builds his career and contributes to the global movement to address climate change.
In William’s interview, he speaks more on his journey to the Sprott MBA and a career in climate change.
