How does employer surveillance impact retail workers and consumers?

The COVID-19 epidemic accelerated long-term trends within the retail sector; changed shoppers’ habits; and positioned retail employees as front-line workers, vulnerable to the spread of the epidemic and consumers’ reactions to new retail regulations. We will employ semi-structured interviews and an MTurk survey to study brick-and-mortar retail stores as workplaces where workers were increasingly affected by both their employers’ use of retail surveillance and the consumers’ reaction to such surveillance.
