Dr. Vinod Kumar received his graduate education from the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Manitoba. He completed ten years as the Director of the Sprott School of Business and is the current head of the Manufacturing Systems Centre at Carleton University. He is a Distinguished Research Professor of Technology and Supply Chain Management. During his leadership as Director of the School from 1995 to 2005, the School raised funds close to $13 million and it was named as Sprott School; during this period the School also started offering Carleton’s first-ever off-shore degree programs in India, Iran and China.
Before joining academia, Dr. Kumar worked for manufacturing industries for almost 15 years in India, the U.S. and Canada in various line and staff management positions. Dr. Kumar has consulted the Department of Industry Canada, Department of Defence, Canada Post Corporation, Public Service Commission, Conference Board and Children Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Ottawa. He coordinated and delivered a faculty workshop in New Delhi, India on Technology Management. This CIDA funded workshop was sponsored by the Canadian Consortium of Management Schools with the sole purpose of initiating the emerging discipline of Technology Management in business graduate programs across India.
Dr. Kumar’s research interests are in the areas of enterprise system adoption and implementation, e-commerce technology strategy, supply chain management, the improvement of production and operations systems, manufacturing flexibility, technology transfer, quality in R&D, and sustainability in supply chain.
Dr. Kumar has published over 360 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings, authored 20 research books and monographs, and contributed chapters in another 46 books. He has been guest editor of four special issues of well known journals. Dr. Kumar is highly sought as a speaker and has been invited to be a key note speaker at several conferences across the world from South Korea, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Canada. He has given invited lectures to professional and academic organizations in Australia, Brazil, China, Iran, and India among others. He has taught in Executive MBA programs in Canada and Hong Kong, and MBA in Colombia, Ottawa, India, Iran and China where he enjoys connecting his industry and research experience with management theories. He has supervised 42 Masters and PhD Theses in addition to supervising 184 Masters Research projects. He currently serves or has served in the past on the editorial boards of nine international journals.
Dr. Kumar’s other honors include two Scholarly Achievement Awards, a Graduate Mentoring Award and four Research Achievement Awards at Carleton, and Best Professor in Supply Chain Management awarded at the World Education Congress in 2012. In 2008, he won Indo-Canada Ottawa Business Chamber award for his service to society and businesses. The more recent (in 2017) and notable is Jack Meredith Award he obtained in Academy of Management, Atlanta, for his 2012 article published in the top-most journal of Operations Management; the article has been cited most during last five years. Twenty-five of his papers appearing in prestigious conference proceedings have won best paper awards. Dr. Kumar has served for several years on the editorial board of International Journals, the Board of Governors and the Senate for Carleton University and on the Board of the Ontario Network of e-Commerce. He has played lead role in developing links of Canada- India Centre of Excellence at Carleton with five academic institutions in India, and negotiating major donation to Carleton University in naming of Richcraft Hall.
