Stoyan Tanev

Associate Professor, Entrepreneurship

Dr. Stoyan Tanev is an Associate Professor, Entrepreneurship, at the Sprott School of Business and associated with the Technology Innovation Management (TIM) master’s program. Dr. Tanev is a scholar in the field of Technology Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management where he is exploring the changing landscape of how entrepreneurs use emerging technologies to identify and shape new opportunities, create new businesses, invent new ways to create value to customers and compete in international markets.

Dr. Tanev’s research and teaching are deeply related to value proposition development; his research program has a unique focus on this strategic marketing construct—specifically, value propositions based on emerging technologies developed or adopted by new and early-stage companies. His research looks at how a new firm can articulate an effective value proposition and integrate it into its business model narratives so that it resonates with new customers and ensures success in global market context. This includes exploratory research transforming publicly available online information into actionable entrepreneurial insights based on the application of Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), advanced text analytics and competitive intelligence tools.

Dr. Tanev’s latest research focus is on developing theory-informed, LLM-assisted competitive intelligence and foresight methods for assessing the disruptive potential of emerging quantum technologies—translating disruptive innovation, architectural innovation, and value proposition constructs into data source-disciplined processes that distinguish documented evidence from unverified claims, illustrated through comparative analysis of competing technological technologies. He extends this work into practice by running a Quantum Technology Business Seminar and a series of events engaging quantum-domain experts, innovation specialists, and business professionals to discuss the adoption of quantum technologies in real-world businesses.

Dr. Tanev sees the growing importance of using language effectively to articulate customer value and believes that innovation includes not merely the adoption, but the invention of the proper language of speaking about the intangible dimensions of value and user experience. His research explores the linguistic aspects of entrepreneurship and innovation management by emphasizing that they are both dependent on effective conversational skills and the specific language used by the companies to articulate value to customers.
