I began my professional journey immediately after high school, joining the Canadian Armed Forces and attending the Royal Military College of Canada. Throughout my career, I have been privileged to lead professional soldiers, sailors, and aviators in IT operations across Canada and around the globe. In my current capacity as a Deputy Commanding Officer, I serve as the senior ranking officer directly supporting the Commanding Officer in both operational and administrative management. My role encompasses oversight of a unit comprising over 600 personnel, where I am responsible for a diverse array of functions including administrative support, business planning, financial management, human resource planning, facilities and infrastructure management, corporate security, and leadership development. My career has afforded me numerous opportunities for both formal and informal training and education; however, I firmly believe in the continual pursuit of knowledge, particularly in understanding corporate business fundamentals. This understanding is crucial for aligning our public-sector processes with modern business practices, thereby enhancing our operational efficiency and effectiveness in defending Canadians and Canadian interests abroad.
My decision to join the Sprott School of Business Professional MBA (PMBA) program was driven by several key factors that align with my professional goals and current responsibilities.Firstly, the program's tailored approach for senior leaders stood out as an ideal fit for my background and experience. It promised to build on my existing leadership skills while introducing new business perspectives and strategies. The emphasis on collaboration within small teams and groups was particularly appealing. I decided that the in-person learning environment would be most conducive to sharing knowledge and gaining insights, and would mirror the teamwork-centric environment that I am accustomed to in the military. The diversity of experience within the classroom, with professionals from various industries, presented a unique opportunity for cross-industry learning and networking, gaining a broader understanding of business practices outside the military framework. The program's accommodating alternating weekend schedule is a perfect fit for my commitment to continue delivering in my role in the Canadian Armed Forces. The flexible schedule ensured that my pursuit of further education did not impede my professional responsibilities. Finally, the focused program schedule, designed to ensure graduation within a concise 16-month timeframe, aligned with my goal of acquiring new skills and knowledge efficiently. As teammates and candidates, we help each other remain accountable and committed to this program.
My last job interview was in 2002!
