Dr. François Brouard doesn’t say “no” very often. In fact, he would describe himself as one who has a high proclivity for saying “yes” or “oui” (he is bilingual after all)—namely when it comes to topics within his research program. As a result, Dr. Brouard has an extremely robust and diverse research program that, interestingly as an Accounting professor and taxation expert, has Brouard researching well-beyond the accounting world. His research taps into an eclectic mix of topics including research in the governance of charities and nonprofits; strategic intelligence of small to mid-size enterprises; the recruitment and life trajectories of accountants—to the business of comedy!
As a tenured Full Professor and a member of the Sprott team for last 22 years, Dr. Brouard has been actively involved in, not only his research projects and course development, but as well, Brouard established, and currently directs, the first ever Sprott Centre for Social Enterprises (SCSE)/Centre Sprott pour les Entreprises Sociales (CSES), a research center created to bring together faculty and graduate students interested in research on social issues. Further to this, Brouard co-created, with the financial support of Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) Ontario, the Sprott Professional Accounting Research Group (PARG). This unique forum is a way of information sharing between the accounting industry and accounting research happening at Sprott.
Current research by his PhD/MSc students includes tax literacy and carbon tax. Much of Brouard’s research circles around small organizations in order to enhance their capabilities. Not forgetting the various notes and cases for MAcc (Master of Accounting) students to better prepare them for the CPA professional exam and for their future careers, especially on the taxation side of accounting.
Dr. Brouard’s research program further explores the “business of comedy.” Specifically, Brouard is taking a unique perspective on the comedy industry in Quebec. His research aims to elucidate successful business strategies for comedians. He founded the Groupe de recherche sur l’industrie de l’humour (GRIH). “Comedians are entrepreneurs; they need to manage their business and their careers to ensure they are successful and to potentially become famous.”
A testament to his dedication and contribution to the industry, Dr. Brouard was honoured as a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) and later as Fellow Chartered Professional Accountant (FCPA). Becoming a Fellow is the highest honour that can be bestowed on a CPA.
