The Alterna Social Ventures Institute presents: Credit & Social Enterprises-Creating Opportunities for Social Enterprise Development

The Alterna Social Ventures Institute is pleased to have Susan Henry and Jean Barrett to discuss microfinance for social enterprises. Susan Henry is the Director, Microfinance & Economic Inclusion for Alterna Savings and Jean Barrett is an Account Manager and Financial Literacy Expert for the Community Microfinance Program at Alterna Savings.

For more than 20 years, Alterna Savings Credit Union has been providing community based micro lending to individuals and organizations. One of its loan products is the Alterna Savings Social Impact Entrepreneurship Loan which is aimed at attracting social entrepreneurs looking to start or grow social enterprises. These social entrepreneurs hold a strong social mission and apply business solutions to societal problems.
This presentation will focus on the following:

• Helping Social Enterprises avoid the pitfalls of weak financial management. We know that social enterprises are focus on their social mission, but weak financial management can be a major cause in social enterprising not reaching their social impact;
• Many of the same principals that apply to your personal finances, apply to your enterprise finances. We will look at what is a good loan and how it will help generate wealth in your social enterprise, and why is it important to save for emergencies and rainy day in your enterprises;
• Borrowing money can help you to grow your social enterprise, but before you borrow make sure you properly understand your business finances so that you understand how you are going to repay the loan;
• As your social enterprise grows you will need to review your banking needs to ensure that you have the best service and fee package for your evolving needs;
• Alterna Savings Social Impact Entrepreneurship Loan and other financing options to help start and grow your social enterprise.
