In Memoriam: Bill Lawson
It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of Bill Lawson, a pillar of the Sprott and Carleton communities, on July 31, 2026.

Bill joined Carleton University in 1975, holding a faculty position in finance. During his tenure, Bill was pivotal to the development of Carleton’s School of Commerce and its advancement to the global business school the Sprott School of Business is today. At the time of his retirement in 2006, Bill was the Associate Director (Administration) and Director of Professional Programs at Sprott. He continued to serve the university as a member of the Carleton University Pension Committee and Dean’s Advisory Board at the Sprott School of Business.
Described by colleagues as a gifted and dedicated educator, Bill had a tremendous impact on his students. He continued teaching after he retired, remaining an adjunct professor of finance and teaching a course in portfolio management until recent years.
Prior to joining Carleton, Bill held faculty positions at Concordia University, the University of Waterloo and York University, where he received his PhD in Finance.
