From Teaching to Giving: Darrell Herauf Continues to Impact Student Success
For 40 years, Darrell Herauf dedicated his professional life to shaping the futures of Carleton University business students, as a professor, case competition coach and mentor. Now, Darrell continues to impact student success at Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business through his philanthropy.
On Thursday, September 17, Carleton and Sprott faculty, staff, students and alumni gathered at a special event to announce the naming of the “Darrell Herauf Student Resource Centre.” The event was an opportunity to honour Darrell and recognize his continued and generous support over the years.
“I loved teaching. I loved interacting with students. I loved seeing the light go on in a student’s mind,” reflected Darrell. “I especially liked the networking events with accounting firms and the annual business banquet. They provided an opportunity for my current students to meet recent grads and discuss the life of an accounting professional. It also allowed me to keep in touch with former students and hear how they were progressing in their careers.”
Darrell made his first gift to the Sprott school in 1985 and has been a dedicated supporter ever since. In 2023, he established the Darrell Herauf Scholarship, the Darrell Herauf Bursary and the Darrell Herauf Experience Fund with a gift of $100,000 to support accounting students. Now, Darrell is deepening his commitment with a generous new gift of $400,000 that will strengthen these areas and create new experiential learning opportunities for all Sprott students.
“Darrell’s incredibly generous commitment will allow us to develop expand vital experiential learning activities, such as case competitions at home and around the globe and cutting-edge training and workshops that give our students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills to meet the needs of a changing workplace and prepare for their future careers,” said Sprott Dean Howard Nemiroff.
Located on the ground level of the Nicol Building, the Darrell Herauf Undergraduate Resource Centre is a collaborative space for undergraduate students at the Sprott School of Business, where students can access peer support, workshops and a place to call their own.
“We have been working hard to build a home where students can feel part of something. We want a heart of the school and to sprout a sense of community, and this space, to me, is the heart of the heart,” said Rebecca Renfroe, Sprott’s associate dean of undergraduate programs and a former student of Darrell’s.
Speaking directly to Darrell, Rebecca added that it is fitting that Sprott’s Undergraduate Resource Centre now bears his name because he is helping to fulfil a vision for the school, where students are supported, education makes a difference and where students can find their community. This vision for the future reflects Darrell’s own approach to teaching and mentorship over the decades.
“I will forever be grateful to Carleton for enjoying more than 40 years of teaching here and for naming this room after me. I hope to continue my philanthropy to Sprott and encourage Sprott graduates, and students who are going to be graduates, to give back to Sprott to the best of their abilities. Together, we will make the world a better place.”
