Sprott School of Business students Elisa Zhengand Sakina Janmohamedreceived Provost Scholar Awards for their outstanding contributions and achievements at Carleton University.
On May 3, 2023, a total of 10 undergraduate Carleton University students were presented with Provost Scholar Awards by the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Jerry Tomberlin and Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) David Hornsby.
These awards, valued at $1,000 each, are granted to exceptional undergraduate students who have exhibited exceptional accomplishments in research, community engagement, immersive learning, and/or international activities. Learn more about this year’s recipients.
Elisa Zheng
Bachelor of International Business student Elisa Zheng has made a great impact across several areas of the Sprott School of Business.
Elisa has taken on several leadership roles for the Sprott Student Consulting Group (SSCG), including Research Assistant (RA), coordinator of the International Business (IB) division, former general manager and strategic committee team lead.
As a teaching assistant and student partner, Elisa made valuable contributions to course delivery and student learning, as well as course designs across academic levels – from first-year undergraduate to master’s graduate level.
Through I-CUREUS and other research initiatives, Elisa conducted research on guanxi and computer-mediated communications, in addition to the pedagogical benefits of discussion forums in international business higher education. She has presented at national and international conferences such as the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, the Academy of International Business, and the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada.
Elisa has also created social, professional, and academic opportunities for students through her work with the Sprott International Business Association, as president and formerly vice-president of events.
Sakina Janmohamed
I fell in love with business after taking my first accounting course in high school. From then on, I knew I wanted to make an impact in the ever-changing business world. To me, winning the provost scholar award is an honour and acknowledges my academic achievements, research, and contributions to the Carleton community.– Sakina Janmohamed
I fell in love with business after taking my first accounting course in high school. From then on, I knew I wanted to make an impact in the ever-changing business world. To me, winning the provost scholar award is an honour and acknowledges my academic achievements, research, and contributions to the Carleton community.
Sakina Janmohamed is a Bachelor of Commerce student with a double concentration in Accounting and Management at Carleton University. Sakina has been deeply involved at Sprott and at Carleton, resulting in deep impact.
For the 2022-23 year, Sakina served as Equity, Diversity and Inclusion director for the Sprott Students’ Business Society. In this role, she organized meaningful events, including Sprott Switch – a student conference that showcased the importance of mental health within education and the workplace.
As a course leader through BUSI 4111 and teaching assistant, Sakina has supported learning for 900 students across a number of courses. She has also assisted in assessing ARHT's live hologram technology with fellow course leaders and Professor Troy Anderson and its use in remote post-secondary instruction and engagement.
In addition, Sakina has served as Chair of the Peer Conduct Board for Carleton residence, represented Sprott ACE, and served as a student ambassador at Sprott undergraduate recruitment events.
