On May 4, Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business welcomed 58 students to the Master of Accounting (MAcc) program.
“I am delighted to welcome our new students to the MAcc program,” said Jacques Maurice, the director of the program. “We have students joining us from across Canada, and I am looking forward to the unique perspectives they will bring to the classroom.”
“And, with a little bit of luck, this will be our first cohort that starts in the midst of a pandemic but will not end during one.”
Launched at Carleton University in 2015, the MAcc is a rigorous, CPA-accredited program that provides students a gateway to a career as a professional accountant. Graduates of this program are exempt from the CPA Canada Professional Education Program (PEP) and proceed directly to the Common Final Examination (CFE), which is the final test before they can become a Chartered Professional Account.
Over the past three years, eight MAcc graduates made the prestigious CFE Honour Roll – which is the glowing distinction of landing in the top 1 per cent of all those who successfully write the exam across Canada.
The MAcc also goes beyond the CPA professional requirements by providing students with all four competencies in the accounting field: assurance, tax, finance and performance management. This provides for greater career flexibility.
The program includes an internship to ensure that students apply their course learning in a practical setting. The internship provides valuable experience, further preparing graduates for a successful career in the professional accounting field. This work experience may also be credited towards CPA Ontario’s practical work experience requirement. Employers interested in hiring a MAcc intern can contact Jeremy Stanley for more information.
The MAcc can also be taken part-time, and applications are currently being accepted to begin this September.
