Meet Our Grads: Ryan Baan, BCom/18
On June 14, we will celebrate the class of 2018 as our newest graduates cross the Carleton University Convocation stage to receive their degrees. To mark this very special occasion, we have asked some of our grads to reflect on their time in the Sprott School of Business.
If you could choose one word to sum up your time at Sprott, what is it and why?
One word to sum up my time at Sprott: thrilling (like a roller coaster)!
What were your goals when you started at Sprott? Did you achieve them?
Going into first year I had zero idea of what I wanted to do after graduation, so the goal I had for myself was to figure that out. I can confidently say I achieved that — I found passions through my studies and have had many fantastic opportunities along the way.
What is your favourite Sprott memory?
My favourite Sprott memory has to be Sprosh (Fall Orientation) every September!
What was the most important lesson you learned during your time at Sprott?
The most important lesson I learned was to take the reins on your own learning. I discovered that learning doesn’t happen only in the lecture hall; that most of the learning you’ll do happens in the opportunities you seek out, the extracurriculars you become involved in, and the people you’ll meet and network with along the way. My curiosity and an openness to new experiences led me to build upon my learning from the classroom and discover new educational opportunities everywhere.
What will you miss the most?
What I’ll miss most is spending time in the undergrad lounge on 7th floor with friends and classmates. Whether we were studying, working on group projects or just hanging out, there were always memories being made on 7th floor.
What’s next for you?
Since completing my degree, I’m now working in marketing and communications at 4-H Canada — a non-profit organization dedicated to positive youth development programming for today’s youth.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the Sprott community?
One last thing I’d like to share with the Sprott community is thank you for the love and the kindness you have offered these last four years. I hope future students continue to feel that love and sense of community for years to come.
