It is with deepest sympathies that we share the sad news that John Wiersema passed away on March 11, 2018. John was a Carleton (Commerce) alumnus and served on the Sprott School of Business Advisory Board for many years, providing valuable guidance and insights from his successful career spanning over 33 years of public service with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada. He was appointed Interim Auditor General of Canada, a position which he held from May to November 2011. Prior to his appointment, he was the Deputy Auditor General from 2004 to 2011, providing representation and strategic support for the Auditor General. His work involved all areas of the Auditor General’s mandate. He was actively involved in the standard-setting work of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
John became a Chartered Accountant in 1981, and was elected to Fellowship in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 2003. He served on many task forces and was a member of the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board from 1999 to 2003. He joined the Public Sector Accounting Board in 2005 and chaired the Board from 2009 to 2011. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of CCAF-FCVI Inc. until his retirement. In 2013, he was appointed to the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board.
John will be deeply missed by the Sprott community. We offer sincere condolences to all who are touched by his loss.
