On Tuesday, over 60 young women from Ottawa-area high schools gathered at Carleton University for the 2nd annual Girls Aloud – Youth Empowerment, a day designed to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs.

“Today, you’re going to have the opportunity to hear from wonderful female entrepreneurs who have done amazing things with their businesses, and they are going to share their journeys with you,” said Annette Levesque, founder of Canada eSchool, who opened the event.

The event featured empowering talks from nine successful women and entrepreneurs:

  • Ilona Smyth, Casting Director and Founder, Smyth Casting
  • Zahra Al-Harazi, Founder, CEO and Creative Director of Foundry Communications
  • Shawna Tregunna, Founder of ReSoMe (Relevant Social Media)
  • Huiping Zhang, President of wintranslation
  • Theresa Beenken, CEO, National Speakers Bureau and Global Speakers Agency
  • Moranne Elara, Founder and Director, Client Partnerships, Pronexia
  • Andi Marcus, Founder of Mistura Beauty
  • Tina Bax, Found and President of CultureWorks

In the afternoon, students put the knowledge they gained to practice during a business development challenge to design a business idea and brand with the support of the entrepreneurs they heard from during the morning session.

The Sprott School of Business is a proud sponsor of Girls Aloud – Youth Empowerment, a non-profit event that provides educational and professional pathways for young women considering post-secondary studies and a career in business and entrepreneurship. Organized by Canada eSchool and Entrepreneurship Ottawa (EO), Girls Aloud – Youth Empowerment was created by Ottawa teen Brianna Dabrowski.
