Professor Hilary Becker reappointed to Certified General Accountants of Canada board of directors

Sprott accounting professor Hilary Becker has been reappointed to the Certified General Accountants (CGA) of Canada Board of Directors for the 2013-14 year.

“These past two years on the CGA Canada’s board has been very challenging yet exciting,” Dr. Becker said. “The merger discussions with the other two accounting bodies in Canada to unite under the CPA banner has been front and centre with CGA Ontario and Manitoba only recently entering into the discussions.”

Dr. Becker has consulted with CGA Ontario in Blue Ocean Strategy and the Balanced Scorecard and has taught Finance, Managerial Accounting and Accounting Theory in the CGA Executive Program. He was a previous author for the MA2 (Advanced Managerial Accounting) course for CGA Canada both domestically and internationally, as well as having written various position papers for CGA Canada.

He has also worked with CGA International on discussions to expand the CGA designation in the Caribbean, and provided train-the-trainer seminar courses on Accounting Theory and Ethics to Accounting Professors from CGA China. He has presented professional development seminars to CGA China in Shanghai on Blue Ocean Strategy and has also served as the Ontario Representative to the National Education Taskforce for CGA Canada. Dr. Becker was also one of the first people in Canada to be Blue Ocean Strategy certified.

Dr. Becker said serving on the board is his way of giving back to an organization that supported him throughout his academic career.

“Both CGA Ontario and Canada supported me in my PhD studies through scholarships and this is an opportunity for me to give back to the designation, and I look forward to having the honour, once again, of serving the 31,000 CGA members and students in Ontario as their representative on the CGA Canada board,” he said.

Dr. Becker has worked with the CGA as the faculty representative to CGA Ontario for the past 15 years for the Sprott School of Business. At Sprott, Dr. Becker teaches Management Accounting and Strategic Management at the undergraduate and MBA levels.
