Sprott professors honoured for graduate student mentoring

Professors Lorraine Dyke, Uma Kumar and Roland Thomas have been honoured with Carleton Graduate Mentoring Awards, which recognize outstanding contributions to the supervision and research mentoring of graduate students. They are among 10 faculty members across Carleton who received the award in 2011.

Recipients of the award are nominated by graduate students and other faculty. The following are excerpts from the nominations.

Lorraine Dyke, Associate Professor of Management and Strategy

“…I truly believe Lorraine is an exceptional mentor. Her guidance and support made me achieve milestones otherwise difficult for any second year PhD student to achieve.”

“Dr. Dyke coaches her students and cheers them on to success, she “opens doors” for them, introducing them to persons who can be of assistance to their research and future careers, plus she serves as a role model or guru, someone who exemplifies the wisdom of social action informed by scholarship, technical skills, compassion and respect for human beings.”

“Dr. Dyke has always been available for providing opinions and valuable, insightful and timely feedback on academic work, however, her commitment to the well being of her students goes well beyond the call of duty….I marvel at Dr. Dyke’s ability to push her students to work harder towards discovering their potential and making them feel that their abilities are remarkable at the same time.”

Uma Kumar, Professor of Management Science and Technology Management

“Professor Kumar was not only a great mentor because of her support for students but also by her own example. In spite of all her teaching, administrative, and students’ commitments, she maintained an unparalleled publishing record.”

“Her insights towards my research have instilled a level of confidence I did not think I’d have.”

“She is unequivocally the only reason I chose to stay for a CU PhD. Not only is she brilliant in her area; pithy in her classroom communications; demanding in her expectations and inspiring in her support to students, but she is truly a caring individual.”

Roland Thomas, Professor Emeritus

“I believe Professor Thomas is one of the best professors at Carleton University….Every student in his class feels that s/he is an important presence in his class.”

“Overall, I think he exemplifies everything one would want in an academic mentor: extensive knowledge of his field, exceptional communication abilities, patience, and a deep interest in helping students succeed.”

“…I had almost 22 years studying experience and had interacted with countless number of teachers and mentors in different countries, including China, Canada, and the United States. I have no hesitation to say that Professor Thomas is the best mentor I have had in my life.
