Have you ever wanted to gain more experience in presentations for class and in the workforce? Have you wanted to participate in a case competition but were unsure of how to even approach a case?
Sprott is launching a new course entitled Business Case Analysis & Presentation (BUSI 3800), which will run in the fall semester of each academic year. The course is coordinated by Professor Riordan and will include interaction with invited faculty and industry experts. The course is designed to develop and hone your critical thinking and presentation skills and should contribute to your success in future courses and in your upcoming employment. Guest lecturers will provide industry experience and advice for real life situations and simulated cases will prepare you for the environment of a case competition.
The course will focus on the examination of various business cases drawn from the real world in the areas of accounting, finance, management and strategy, entrepreneurship, information systems, marketing, not-for-profit, operations management and others. Many existing Sprott courses will be integrative and cross-functional with BUSI 3800. Instructional components will include rigorous case analysis methods, techniques and approaches to the crafting of recommendations emanating from the analysis, data visualization, leadership and followership and approaches to presentation of results and recommendations to a panel of expert judges. The course consists of three hours of lecture per week and will require weekly attendance at a lab/tutorial session, as well as preparation of cases, both individually and as a group. While not finalized, the evaluation scheme will assess your acumen at case analysis, presentation and group work. A test/examination component may be included.
Prerequisites
7.0 MAJOR CGPA, and you must have completed all core courses below the 3000 level – exceptions may be made for BUSI 2300, BUSI 2601, ECON 2002/2102 (or equivalents) and STAT 2607 which are not mandatory prerequisites for BUSI 3800. (You are strongly encouraged to co-register in 3103 and 3300.)
Going forward, successful completion of this course will be a prerequisite for consideration for membership on any of Sprott’s Case Competition Teams. (It is also STRONGLY recommended that you enrol in Carleton’s Toastmasters Club.) For JDC Central 2011 ACADEMIC team membership, first consideration will be given to those who are enrolled in BUSI 3800 in the fall term. You will also need to apply separately to the JDC management team at Sprott in order to be considered for ANY team. Successful enrolment in this course in no way guarantees selection to a JDC or JMUCC (or other) team, and not being enrolled does not automatically mean that you are excluded from membership on a case competition team.
