The Career Development Committee is planning professional development sessions for the 2025/26 academic year.
Please help us prioritize by ranking the topics below according to your level of interest and perceived value.

We have also included a separate section for potential new capacity building initiatives that could be open to the whole Sprott research community.

Section 1 – Career Development Committee Session Ideas

Funding Overview (Internal & External Opportunities) – Overview of research funding available at Carleton and from external agencies.

Graduate Student Supervision – Guidance from experienced faculty on best practices for supervising graduate students, managing expectations, and fostering productive research relationships.

How to Get a Paper Published – Practical insights from faculty who have served as journal reviewers or editors, including tips on manuscript preparation, responding to reviewer comments, and increasing acceptance chances.

Research Resources & Data Sources – Overview of available research resources, such as the Carleton University Research Data Centre (cuRDC), and how to access and use datasets effectively.

Life After Tenure & Promotion – Discussion on how research priorities, opportunities, and expectations shift after earning tenure and promotion, including strategies for maintaining momentum and working toward full professor.

Finding Research Collaborators/Partners – Strategies for identifying and connecting with potential research collaborators within and outside the university.

Section 2 – Potential New Capacity Building Initiatives

These initiatives could be open to the entire Sprott research community and delivered as a series outside the Career Development Committee’s regular sessions. Please indicate your interest in the following initiatives.

Grant Writing Camp – Multi-part workshop to learn from past grant review committee members, practice giving and receiving live feedback, and develop an understanding of how reviewers read and evaluate proposals.

Structured Facilitated Writing Sessions – Regularly scheduled writing blocks (virtual or in-person) with light facilitation to help participants focus on publications, grant proposals, or other writing projects.
