Master of Accounting FAQ

Unfortunately there are no scholarships available for the program. However, the MAcc is OSAP eligible and if you are a student coming from Ontario, you may be eligible for financial assistance through the Ontario Student Assistance Program.
-
The MAcc program works in a cohort mode where students are expected to follow the schedule laid out by the program and complete all courses together from start to finish. In that respect, the MAcc program does not work like an undergraduate program and it is very difficult to adjust your schedule.

Please visit our online Fee Estimator for a breakdown of fees.
Any further inquiries regarding fees or payments can be directed to student_accounts@carleton.ca
Full-time MAcc students must pay full-time fees over the course of every semester that they are registered in the program (Summer, Fall and Summer). Part-time students must pay part-time fees over the course of all six of the semesters that they are registered the program.
*Please note these fees are subject to change.

One of the MAcc program requirements is that a substantial number of prerequisite courses need to be taken at a Canadian Post-Secondary Institution. Due to this requirement, Internationally Trained Accountants cannot apply directly to the MAcc before having taken these prerequisite courses.
If you have already obtained a professional accounting designation from another country, you may qualify for getting the CPA designation in Canada without taking our Master’s program. To determine whether you qualify, please visit: https://www.cpaontario.ca/become-a-cpa/why-cpa/internationally-trained-accountants

If you have not completed all of the prerequisite courses during your undergraduate degree, you have a few different options:
Carleton offers a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting which is a 2 year online program that covers the core prerequisite courses. If you have further questions on this program please contact PBDA@sprott.carleton.ca.
Alternatively, you may wish to complete one or more of these courses at Carleton as a Special Student. Find more information about becoming a special student on the Carleton Registrar website.
You can also complete the outstanding prerequisites through the CPA Preparatory Courses, or through another Canadian Post-Secondary Institution. Please review our MAcc Prerequisite Forms which lists equivalent prerequisite courses from various Canadian Post-Secondary Institutions.
-
If you completed all or a portion of the CPA prerequisite courses outside of Canada, you will be required to complete the following prerequisite courses at a Canadian post-secondary institution:
- Intermediate Financial Accounting I and II
- Advanced Financial Accounting
- Assurance
- Taxation
- Business Law
Note that all of the above courses with the exception of Business Law can be completed by registering in the Sprott Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting.
-
Unfortunately we are unable to provide advanced standing in the MAcc as the courses are not mapped directly to the CPA PEP.
-
Please email macc@sprott.carleton.ca. We aim to respond within 48 hours or as quickly as possible during peak periods.

Previous work experience is not required, but it is considered an asset.

The language of instruction at Carleton is English. For admission into Carleton’s graduate programs, you will need to demonstrate that your knowledge and use of English are strong enough for graduate studies at an English-language university.
If your first language is not English, you can prove your language proficiency by:
- presenting one of the official Language Proficiency (ESL) test score as defined in the table found here;
- showing that you have completed ESLA 1900 or ESLA 1905 at Carleton University with a final grade of B- or higher; or
- present official certification (transcripts) that you have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree within the past three years in a university in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom or any country in which the primary language is English, where the language of instruction in the relevant educational institution was English, and the language of instruction in their most recently completed undergraduate or graduate degree was English.
Please note that the MAcc program requires a number of courses to be completed in Canada in order to be eligible for the program. As these courses are likely to be completed in English, you may be exempt from providing proof of language proficiency.
-
Upon successful completion of the MAcc program, students proceed directly to the CPA Common Final Examination, which is one of the final steps in becoming a Chartered Professional Accountant.

As part of the online application process, you will be asked to give the name and contact information of your two references. They will then be sent an automated email with a standard form to complete. Please advise your referees that they can expect this email. We are unable to assess your application until we have received both references.
