In October my boyfriend, Matt, come to visit and we decided to check out Potsdam, the capital of the state of Brandenburg. Potsdam is the city the King of Prussia resided in until 1918 and has quite a number of beautiful castles.
Potsdam’s city is not very big, but in order to be able to see everything in a short period of time, Matt and I rented bikes for 24 hours.
Here are some pictures of our adventures:
Sanssouci Park is the castle grounds for the, Neue Castle (New Castle) Sanssouci Palace, the Orangerie Schloss.
This castle was built just after the 7 Year War to prove that Prussia was still as strong as before the war.
This palace was built from 1851 to 1864, by Friedrick William IV and was used as a summer home or reprieve from Sanssouci.
At the end of our biking trip we went to Babelsberg. Unlike the rest of the city, this area had steep hills and was difficult for biking. Unfortunately, since it was late fall, the actual castle of Babelsberg was under construction. However there were still some pretty impressive buildings to discover.
In the middle of the city of Potsdam there is the Brandenburg Gate. This gate is not related to the Brandenburg gate in Berlin, but was used by the King of Prussia during the 7 Year War to prevent against desertion and smuggling from within the city.Grüβe!
