Sprott Grad Receives Inaugural Commerce Class of 65’ Eric Sprott Award

On Friday, Lauren Noble crossed the stage at Carleton University Convocation to receive her Bachelor of Commerce degree. Just a few days later, she stepped up to the mic as the inaugural recipient of the Commerce Class of ’65 Eric Sprott Award.

“Receiving this award is an incredible honour. To be recognized by an alumni group whose friendship and connection to Sprott is inspiring,” said Noble.

“This award is a reminder of the strength, resilience and passion of the Sprott community, and I am deeply grateful to the Class of ’65 for investing in my future.”

Awarded annually, the Commerce Class of ’65 Eric Sprott Award provides substantial financial support to an outstanding undergraduate student in their final year at the Sprott School of Business. This individual will have demonstrated leadership and a generosity of spirit during their time at Carleton and will have had an impact on their classmates and/or the broader community.

“I started university in 2021 as a pandemic-era commuter student when connection was difficult to find,” said Noble. “Realizing university had to be more than sitting in lecture halls and driving home, I joined the Sprott Business Students’ Society, which then lit a fire in me to sign up and take on as many other roles during my undergrad.”

And that she did.  She took on roles of increasing responsibility within the Sprott Business Students’ Society (SBSS), including serving as President this past year. During her tenure, she organized several fundraisers supporting the Ottawa Food Bank, Movember and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. As an executive of SBSS, she attended conferences where she represented the Sprott School among business student leaders across Canada, and she served as the Eastern Board Representative for the Canadian Association of Business Students. She was also involved with Sprott’s team for the Jeux du Commerce Central (JDCC) as the team’s marketing director and leading one of the sports’ teams.

Furthermore, Noble supported many students in their academics as a teaching assistant for management courses and as a course leader for Organizational Behaviour. She also helped promote the school as a Sprott ambassador at high school recruitment events, which included speaking at her former high school about the Sprott student experience.

Noble, who has a double concentration in Management and Marketing, completed internships and held part-time positions during her studies with the Sherpa Group, Nokia and at Carleton supporting Sprott’s executive education programs. She also received the Provost’s Scholar Award earlier this year.

Announced last year, this special award was established by members of the Commerce Class of 1965 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of their graduation.

Throughout the years, the friendships made during their time at Carleton University continued and strengthened by their commitment to stay connected. The classmates have gathered for Christmas lunches, Toronto Blue Jays’ games and have returned to campus many times to celebrate milestones. Peter Nash (BCom/65) is often credited by his classmates as the glue that has held them together over the past 60 years.

“This award was a way for us to leave a legacy at Carleton,” said Nash. “We wanted to recognize a student who is giving back inside or outside the school.”

Nash was joined by some of his classmates on Tuesday to present Noble with the inaugural award. The group included Eric Sprott (BCom/65), an investor, entrepreneur and philanthropist for whom the school is named.

This year marks 25 years since Sprott made a transformational gift of $10 million to Carleton’s business school. This gift sparked the evolution of the Sprott School of Business, from obtaining faculty status, the launch of many new programs and the opening of the Nicol Building in 2021. During Tuesday’s event, Dean Howard Nemiroff recognized this momentous milestone. The school is planning activities to celebrate this milestone in the coming school year.
