Carleton Commerce Alumnus Jacques Bonneau Establishes Scholarship to Support Student Leaders

As a student at Carleton University in the ‘70s, Jacques Bonneau (BCom/76) was actively involved in student-led initiatives for the school and served as vice president of the Commerce Society. Now, he is establishing a significant scholarship to give back to student leaders at Carleton’s Sprott School of Business.

“My years at Carleton University are some of my fondest moments. A beautiful setting, interesting classes, great classmates and always a good balance between studying and a social life. I am in a measure to give back to the University for helping me with my business career. It is a small token of what I was able to achieve in good part due to my time at Carleton, but I hope it helps some students have one less thing to worry about,” said Bonneau.

“Focus on your classes and your friends and developing into a strong leader who leads by example. A leader who is focused on execution and does the right thing. Sometimes doing the right thing is the hardest, but in the long run it will always serve you well.”

The Jacques Bonneau Family Scholarship in Leadership is valued at $10,000 and will be awarded annually to an outstanding full-time undergraduate student proceeding from third to fourth year in a Bachelor of Commerce with a concentration in Marketing or a Bachelor of International Business. Eligible recipients will demonstrate that they have taken on an active leadership role within the Sprott School of Business, on campus or within their community.  Applications are currently being accepted for the inaugural award; the deadline to apply is May 15.

Bonneau retired from a highly successful career as an executive in the re/insurance industry. He served as President and CEO of Partner Re Ltd, in senior executive roles at Chubb, and senior advisor to the Bermuda Monetary Authority. He was recently appointed to the Board of Brit Re.

Throughout his career, Bonneau has given back to his professional and local communities. He has remained connected to his alma mater and has generously supported the student experience at the Sprott School of Business. In 2019, a classroom in the Nicol Building was named in his honour.
