In contemporary Western societies, accounting concepts such as budgeting and cost analysis are increasingly becoming part of daily life, including personal financial management. However, little is known about how the arrival of children affects parents’ use of these tools or how they manage finances, particularly regarding children’s needs like clothing, food, and activities. Research suggests that financial practices differ between men and women, with parenthood impacting them in distinct ways. For instance, women often face greater financial challenges, including lower financial literacy and more career sacrifices, which influence their financial management.

This research project seeks to explore how parents, particularly mothers, handle the financial demands associated with children. It aims to answer questions such as how financial management changes with parenthood, what practices are implemented to meet children’s needs, and how these practices differ between mothers and fathers. Through interviews with Canadian mothers and a longitudinal survey, the project will provide insights into parental financial challenges and help assess government support measures for families.
