Sprott Student Receives EDI Research Award to Support Carleton’s 2SLGBTQ+ Community

Sprott School of Business Bachelor of Commerce student Aanya Baindur has received a 2023 Carleton University Student EDI Research Award to support her research project, “Exploring the Experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ Students at Carleton University through a Lens of Intersectionality and using GBA+ Framework to Analyze the Impact of University Policies and Initiatives.”

The research funding granted to Aanya will allow the Carleton University 2SLGBTQ+ community to have a platform to voice their experiences and provide feedback on how current university policies and initiatives are affecting them.

“The proposed research will help answer the question: Do 2SLGBTQ+ students feel like the University is doing enough to support them? What is the University doing right and what could the University be doing better? Identifying barriers to success for 2SLGBTQ+ students will help determine how these students experience marginalization on campus, which will allow us to make recommendations to rectify the shortcomings,’ shared Aanya.

Aanya’s research will be supervised by Rick Colbourne, Sprott associate dean of equity and inclusive communities and associate professor of Indigenous Leadership and Management.

The student-led study will form a baseline upon which further research can be conducted and built. The research outcomes will be used to create a journal paper, report, and presentation that will help inform changes to classrooms to better support 2SLGBTQ+ students.

“The recommendations and feedback received could be used to improve the classroom learning experience of students and in turn, will help in the recruitment and retention of 2SLGBTQ+ students. Similar studies have been undertaken at different universities and results have been used to inform meaningful changes in policy and practice.”
