Through his research project, Dynamic Networks in Financial Markets, Mohamed is working to construct a representation of the economy based on social media discussions, which can then be used to study economic shocks. Using over 350 million financial tweets, this project explores how networks and clusters of firms form, evolve and fade – and also looks at the ensuing network structure in a time-varying manner.

The Research Achievement Awards are administered by the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International) to recognize outstanding research accomplishments by members of Carleton University. This year there were 10 award recipients, and each award is valued at $15,000.

Isaac Otchere, Professor, Finance

2022 Teaching Achievement Award

Isaac is developing a project – Using Business Simulations to Promote Experiential Learning in the Era of Online Teaching – that uses team-based multiplayer simulations to foster experiential learning at a time when the need to engage students has been amplified by the lack of physical interaction among students and instructors. The simulations will provide opportunities for students to play different roles, while highlighting connections between specific academic topics and real-world societal issues and applications.

This innovative project is meant to enhance students’ ability to view issues from multiple perspectives and improve overall student knowledge retention.

The Teaching Achievement Awards are administered by the Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and are intended to enhance the teaching of their recipients and the quality of instruction at the university. There were four award recipients this year, and each award is valued at $15,000.
