Student Blogs/Priya in Mexico
Last weekend the International students team (Triple W) arranged a food tour in the heart of downtown Guadalajara. We visited five different restaurants and tried some of the most popular dishes and beverages in México. This was the perfect way to explore the different foods and cultures of México.
Since I moved to Guadalajara, I have noticed that a lot of the dishes here include pork as the main source of meat. I found this a bit challenging since I do not eat pork, however the chicken and seafood here are a great alternative! The one thing I can say that I am enjoying the most is the fresh fruits!
Throughout downtown, you can find people selling all kinds of fruits that are already cut up and sold in plastic containers. For a girl who loves tropical fruits, this is basically a dream come true. There are a lot of places to buy fresh fruit downtown, however there is a Walmart that is a 10 minute walk to my school. On a side note, the Walmart here is set up exactly like the ones back home! The only difference that I noticed is that the fruits and veggie section is a lot larger and there are many more choices! Also, the prices for fruit here are a lot cheaper since most of it is locally grown and not imported.
The shopping centers here are amazing and very big. My favorite mall so far has been Andares. This mall is four floors and includes any and every store that you can think of. A few of my favorites are Michael Kors, Guess, Coach, Zara, Aldo, Aeropostal, and Best Buy.
I was very surprised at the number of high-end brands that are present here in México. I have noticed that a lot of Méxican women enjoy wearing bright colours. Also, Michael Kors and Coach are brands that you see everywhere on the streets.
Downtown Guadalajara is beautiful; from the architecture to the people, you feel welcomed. A lot of the architecture is based on the Spanish colonization, which also includes some Arab designs too. Downtown, you can also experience the strong Indigenous cultures that are present in México. I was lucky to experience some performances last weekend. From the beautiful costumes to the music, it was a sight to see! I am really enjoying the experiences that I am having here in México so far and I am really looking forward to what the rest of the year has in store for me.
I have attached some pictures to give you all a insight to my new home.
Until next time,
Priya :)
