Hey everyone!
With all the fuss of moving to a different country I completely forgot to tell you a little about me. I was born in Austria and moved to Canada when I was five. Currently, I am living in Belgium (as you already know) and this is the first time I have moved out of my parent’s house. I found an apartment when I was in Canada. Moving out for the first time was easier than expected, although I do miss my mom’s cooking once in awhile.
Since arriving here all the necessities are walking distance; the grocery store, fast food joints, the university, coffee shops, and bakeries on every corner.
I managed to get a bus pass for the entire year, with help from the University. After this it is super easy to get around Brussels. They have buses, trams and metros that all intersect at the major stations. After learning how to read the map it was time to start exploring.
The first trip took place to central Brussels. Here they have a famous statue called “mannekepis." There are several legends associate with this little peeing statue. The most common, and most loved, is that there was a little boy that extinguished a burning village with what you see him doing in the image. They also dress him up sometimes and they have a museum where they keep most of his costumes that he wore.
In continuing the adventure of the city, it was off to the Atomium. This is a super big atom. In different parts of the city you can see this ginormous atom. You can even go inside and look at some exhibits. All the way at the top is a spectacular view of the city.
The first two exhibits are always there and explain the history of the atom. The next exhibits are temporary. The one that I witnessed had to do with sound and light, and let me tell you they did a great job. I posted some pictures so that you are able to at least see what they came up with.
I've also had a chance to sample some of the world-famous Belgian chocolate and waffles. They definitely taste as good as they look!
