Sprott hosting JDC Central 2012 this weekend

This weekend, 450 business students are coming to campus to test their knowledge, spirit, teamwork and determination in Ontario’s largest undergraduate business competition. Teams from 10 universities from central and eastern Canada are competing in JDC Central 2012, hosted by the Sprott School of Business.

JDC Central 2012 is a three-day competition comprised of eight academic case analyses, a parliamentary-style debate, sports competitions and social challenges. Following the 2011 competition, Sprott students successfully bid to bring the competition to Carleton. The organizing committee of mostly Sprott alumni and students has worked tirelessly for over a year to create a memorable experience for delegates.

“Although delegates strive for the prestigious title of ‘School of the Year’, our hope is that they take away so much more,” says Christine Jackson, co-chair of the JDC Central 2012 organizing committee and fourth-year Commerce student.

“The goal of the weekend is to unite aspiring business leaders through spirit, camaraderie and friendly competition. If all of the delegates leave with any combination of new found knowledge, improved physical or mental endurance, or lasting friendships, we know that we have done our job. The true test? How many people still have a voice on Monday morning!”

The organizing committee has added new elements to the competition, including two new case categories of international business and human resources.

The committee also created an entirely new sport called Planetball for the sports competition, which also features flag football. Planetball is a fast-paced, high scoring sport that combines elements of handball, ultimate Frisbee and soccer.

Jackson attributes the Sprott School’s reputation for school spirit, active leaders and supportive faculty to the success of bringing the competition to Carleton. However, she knows first-hand that organizing a competition of this size is no easy feat.

“After being selected as co-chairs in December 2010, Mark Featherstonhaugh (BCom/11) and I spent hours building the skeleton of what we wanted to be the best JDCC yet. With a team of 12 VPs working with us, we have put every bit of effort possible into planning this competition,” says Jackson.

“Hundreds of emails, dozens of sponsorship applications and countless hours in meeting rooms later, we have put together an unbelievable weekend for our delegates. I think I speak for all 14 of us when I say that the past year has been an incredible experience and will be missed once the weekend is over.”

The competition kicks off on Friday and takes place at various locations around campus.

Team Sprott at JDCC 2012

A team of 48 Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of International Business students are representing the Sprott School of Business at JDC Central 2012. The team is hoping to best last year’s second-place finish and take home the coveted “School of the Year” award.
