Hi again everyone! I was trying to think about what I should talk about in my second post for this blog and I thought it would be great to introduce my friends back home to the city that I now call my second home, Adelaide!
Adelaide is the capital city of the state of South Australia and its home to about 1.2 million people, so it’s a slightly bigger city than Ottawa. It doesn’t have the glamour that Sydney and Melbourne do, but to be honest I’ve been to those cities and I’d much rather live here. Why, you ask? Well, for starters, Adelaide is 25% less expensive to live in than Sydney or Melbourne, and 11% less expensive than Perth or Brisbane and when you’re already stretching your budget to its limits to get here, that can represent huge savings for an international student.
So right about now you’re probably thinking “okay, it’s cheaper...but is it really any better?” That’s a very relative question, but in my opinion, it certainly is. Adelaide is not only the cheapest major Australian city, but it’s also the safest, meaning that when you’re all alone on the other side of the world from home, you can feel safe and comfortable, which to me is very important. Adelaide is also a university town with 3 major universities (UniSA, Adelaide, and Flinders) and a major college (TAFE SA), which are always bringing thousands of new international students into the city. Adelaide is home to about 30,000 international students every year, which pumps nearly $900 million into the economy every year, which means that they treat their international students very well! There are many dedicated agencies for helping international students thrive in Adelaide, including my employer, Study Adelaide. Adelaide is also a very exciting city to be in! South Australia is known as “The Festival State” meaning that there are always exciting festivals going on in the city. In my opinion, the best festival so far has been the Adelaide Fringe Festival, which has tonnes of artists from around the world who come to perform various shows, such as comedy, theatre, dance, and anything else you can think of! The prices were really cheap, and it made for many great nights out, as the festival is a month long!
Besides the festivals, Adelaide has great night life and a core of people who are always trying to make the city a better place to live in. It’s extremely refreshing to live in a city that is always trying to improve and make itself a better place for its citizens to live.
So that’s all I have to say about Adelaide for now. I hope everyone back home is enjoying the summer weather!
