Why do some organizations’ boards fail? The answer might lie in how directors perceive their expertise and responsibilities
Oriane Couchoux, Carleton University While many of us can name a handful of CEOs, identifying directors serving on the boards of those same organizations is probably more challenging. The work of directors, whether they hold volunteer or compensated positions, is rarely publicized, and when it is, it is rarely good news. Indeed, corporate scandals often prompt public scrutiny, focusing on the board’s role and questioning how directors could have overlooked issues or been complicit in questionable organizational conduct. Consider instances such as Valeant Pharmaceuticals’ questionable accounting practices, which went undetected and unreported by the board. Or the loose oversight of FTX’s board, which led to the collapse of its cryptocurrency exchange. Or consider the shortcomings of USA Gymnastics’ and Hockey…

Sprott Research Seminar: Dr. Jeffrey Reuer
We invite you to join us at the next Sprott Research Seminar with Dr. Jeffrey Reuer, Fulbright Canada Distinguished Chair at the Sprott School of Business. Dr. Reuer will be giving a talk entitled ‘Temporal Dynamics of Risk Allocation and Contracting in Startups’ Interorganizational Relationships’. Abstract We bring information economics and signaling theory to the study of contracts supporting interorganizational relationships by investigating how startups and their partners allocate risk in their deals. We demonstrate several unique and interesting temporal patterns and tradeoffs that startups encounter in contracting. All else equal, startups receive worse terms in their first deals compared to later ones, and this is especially so when they collaborate with a prominent firm. However, their subsequent deals are…

How to cope with pandemic fatigue by imagining metaphors
Luciara Nardon, Carleton University and Amrita Hari, Carleton University Metaphors are figures of speech that imply likeness; they can be useful tools in dealing with pandemic fatigue. (Shutterstock) The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have dramatic impacts on mobility, work routines, social interactions and psychological distress. Although no longer novel, the pandemic is still causing an overall disruption of normality and challenging our ability to make sense of the world around us. The World Health Organization has been drawing attention to pandemic fatigue, a natural response to a prolonged public health crisis. Pandemic fatigue involves decreasing motivation to follow health-related directives, including engaging in pandemic protective actions like eating well, exercising and decreasing tobacco or alcohol consumption. All levels of public health are attempting to explain, prevent and cope with this phenomenon. Making…

What is sustainability accounting? What does ESG mean? We have answers
Leanne Keddie, Carleton University Sustainability is a hot topic today due to increasing awareness of climate change and inequality, among other pressing issues. As consumers, we can change our lifestyle, our investments and demand change from our governments. Together — along with accountants — we can get there. (Charl Folscher/Unsplash) The Earth just recorded a seven-year hot streak and we’re approaching the COVID-19 pandemic’s first anniversary. The crisis has had enormous implications on our mental health, the economy and income inequality. Post-pandemic, we need to build back better, and sustainability will be the key to success. What is sustainability? There is no universal definition of sustainability, but many point to the United Nations’ 1987 Brundtland Report that calls for sustainable development that meets our needs…

Emoji power: How a ? or a ?? fuel social media engagement, especially amid COVID-19
Ethan Pancer, Saint Mary’s University and Lindsay McShane, Carleton University The emoji has become a critical part of our online communications, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when face-to-face contact is hard to come by. (Domingo Alvarez/Unsplash) The restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic drove life online in 2020, where it will probably remain for much of 2021. The way we communicate quickly pivoted to Zoom meetings, remote learning and messaging on social media. And in the absence of face-to-face interactions, people quickly became more reliant on emojis to help express their thoughts and feelings to an audience they can no longer see in person. A man wearing a protective face mask and gloves walks past a large emoji face painted on the boarded-up windows of a store on Robson Street, in Vancouver,…
