And now I really see the benefits and I would like to go to more networking events,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/profile\/howard-nemiroff\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Howard Nemiroff<\/a>, Sprott\u2019s associate dean of Undergraduate Studies, says that this is the exact goal for the program, to motivate students to start immediately connecting with the world they are preparing to join.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAcademics, student engagement and employability skills are the three prongs of a Sprott BCom education,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy infusing the employability skills into our curriculum, we are providing students with an opportunity to develop workplace skills that synthesize those three prongs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-5.jpg\" alt=\"Sprott and the Employability Passport to the Future\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"skills-structured-and-captured-online\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skills structured and captured online<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Launched this fall as a pilot for first-year&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/programs\/bachelor-of-commerce\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bachelor of Commerce<\/a>&nbsp;students (it will eventually roll out to other programs), the passport lays out activities to be completed annually that fit under eight broad pillars \u2013 career management, communications, global perspective, leadership, professionalism, teamwork, technology and good business.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-2.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Carleton University student Lauren Page, a student in the Sprott School of Business taking part in the Employability Passport program..\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-2-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-2-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-2-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-2-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-2-200x113.jpg 200w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lauren Page<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set up in the learning management system as a non-credit career development course, students log in to see the annual requirements and register their activities. They also post reflections and report takeaways, which additionally helps them articulate their undertakings and the benefits. Activities build in difficulty, for instance a resume review in first year is followed by a mock interview in later years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lauren Page, another first-year student with a concentration in finance and accounting, has already created a resume and had it reviewed as part of her \u201ccareer management\u201d requirement. She says the program is easily understandable online and will give students an \u201cedge\u201d when competing in the workforce or even beforehand as she will soon.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEspecially since I\u2019m a co-op student, it gives me an edge when getting interviews, an edge to have my resume look more professional,\u201d says Page.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also completed her networking requirement by attending a \u201ctea and biscuits with the dean\u201d event, where she appreciated the opportunity to connect with school administration and her peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-6.jpg\" alt=\"Sprott's Employability Passport to the Future\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"employability-passport-well-rounded-program-and-personalized-activities\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Employability Passport: Well-rounded program and personalized activities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the passport is now a requirement for graduation, it is not about adding more work for students, but rather giving them credit for activities they already pursue.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/alumni\/navigate-your-career-ottawa\/linda-schweitzer\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Linda Schweitzer<\/a>, interim Sprott dean when the passport was developed, explains the passport formalizes and clarifies extracurriculars.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-4.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Mawuena Torkornoo, Senior External Relations Officer at the Sprott School of Business, helps administer the Employability Passport program.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-4.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-4-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-4-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-4-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-4-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprott-employability-passport-future-1200w-4-200x113.jpg 200w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mawuena Torkornoo, Senior External Relations Officer at the Sprott School of Business<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe wanted to provide a clear and explicit framework through which Sprott can facilitate a collaborative effort between students, faculty, staff and the external community in the development of well rounded, job-ready Sprott business graduates,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/profile\/mawuena-torkornoo\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mawuena Torkornoo<\/a>, Sprott\u2019s senior external relations officer who helps administer the program, adds that there\u2019s a lot of latitude for personal preferences; for instance, volunteering for a club on campus or a charity in which students are already involved can count.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe activities often represent and credit things students are already doing, such as going to an information session at the career centre or attending an industry partner event,\u201d says Torkornoo.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program also gets students thinking about their future sooner than they might otherwise. In addition to attending the networking event, Coulter has had his resume reviewed, completed a LinkedIn course to boost his knowledge about social media, and created an elevator pitch which he then practised at the networking event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coulter says he and his friends were particularly grateful the networking event was also a friendly environment, yet another reflection of the collaboration Schweitzer outlined.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey taught us how to talk to professionals, which can be kind of scary.
