Student Blogs/Alex in Spain
Hello all!
My name is Alexandria Hewko. I am a third-year student in the Bachelor of International Business program at the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University. I am in the International Marketing & Trade concentration, with a minor in Spanish language and culture.
After two years of studying intensive Spanish language and culture courses, I am currently living in Pamplona, Spain. Pamplona, famous for the running of the bulls (San Fermin), sits in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains, one hour south of the French border.
Although I now find myself living the reality of one of my biggest dreams of the past few years, there was a long story of events which brought me to this adorable northern city. I promise I’ll try to keep it short for now.
When I was thinking about what I wanted from my university experience in the beginning of grade 12, I could only be certain of two things: a semester abroad and to be outside the province of Alberta. I was originally interested in the University of Alberta’s Bachelor of Commerce program, as they offered a great study abroad experience. However, Edmonton was still far too close to where I had spent my entire life and I needed somewhere new.
My mom sent me the link to Carleton’s Bachelor of International Business program right before applications opened. This unique program offers a full year of exchange, the opportunity to learn an entirely new language, and was situated in Ottawa, Ontario. How could I say no?
Being a student at the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University has been filled with growth, opportunities and love. Over the past two years, I became involved with Sprott DECA (Carleton DECA), played intramural volleyball every semester, attended the Ottawa Mayor's Breakfast, travelled to Harvard for an intercollegiate business conference, and participated as a sleeper for the annual 5 Days for the Homeless campaign. The opportunities were endless!
I am so eager to see how these experiences will act as my survival tools for this upcoming year of learning, adapting and exploring in this beautiful country.
Until the next post,
Alex
