Undergraduate Students/BCMC/Your Four Year Plan

1st Year: Introduction

  • Familiarize yourself with Sprott’s Business Career Management Centre – drop by 704 Dunton Tower 8:30 – 4:30
  • Meet Alanna, Katie and Robin, your friendly Career Coordinators
  • Get involved in extracurricular activities either on or off campus
  • For students in BUSI1800, we will be delivering some career-related content in your class, including resume and interview assignments
  • Attend one or two career events – of particular interest is the student-run SBSS Business Banquet in late November
  • Create an account on the Sprott Career Portal (mySprott)and on the main career centre’s portal, mySuccess; explore these systems
  • Consider co-op opportunities to increase your experiential opportunities
  • Complete the Career Leader Assessment Test if you have questions about your career direction – ask BCMC staff to assist

2nd Year: Identify Career Interests

  • Continue to research career and academic options. Think about the concentration(s) that will best position you for a preferred career(s)
  • Keep up your extracurricular activities and increase student club presence
  • Focus on academics and identify those concentrations of most interest
  • Practice networking skills at career events and business competitions
  • Make an appointment with a Career Coordinator to discuss career options
  • Utilize mySprott and mySuccess to find part‐time and summer positions
  • Use Career Leader for a personalized career assessment if not completed in 1st year

3rd Year: Build Your Career Brand

  • Attend employer information sessions to explore companies
  • Attend Sprott Concentration panels to hear from alumni in your area of interest
  • Identify your target career and become a student member with the related professional association
  • Have your resume and cover letter re-checked by a Career Coordinator; book a mock interview
  • Build your employer network by attending events and networking with employers
  • Ensure your social media is ’employer-viewable’; establish a strong LinkedIn presence
  • Search for summer positions to gain applicable experience
  • Continue to enhance your leadership skills through extracurricular involvement

4th Year: Manage Your Career Entry

  • Strategically plan and attend employer information sessions and events
  • Familiarize yourself with employer application deadlines, many are early in the first term
  • Continue to attend Sprott-specific events or events hosted by the main career centre
  • Meet with a Career Coordinator to discuss job search, interviewing, evaluating offers and career goals
  • Maximize your networking opportunities by attending professional and career events
  • Update your information with the Carleton Alumni office and with our Sprott Alumni Officer
