Biography


With 34 years in the hi-tech and telecommunications sector, Steve Spooner has a wealth of experience in corporate finance, M&A, corporate governance, strategic business planning and operational leadership.

As Chief Financial Officer for Mitel Networks, a $1.2B, 3700 person cloud and premises based communications solutions company, Steve has global responsibility for Finance, Legal, Information Technology, M&A, Investor Relations, Leasing, Procurement, Facilities and Internal Audit.  Steve’s past experience includes roles as CEO, COO and CFO of both emerging and established industry players including tenures at Digital, Wang, SHL Systemhouse, CrossKeys Systems, Stream Intelligent Networks and Wysdom.

Steve has significant capital raising experience, most notably having led the largest IPO in Ottawa’s history, when Mitel raised $147M on NASDAQ in 2010 and later refinanced $355M of debt in support of the acquisition of Aastra in 2014. Steve also led the raising of $760M of debt and equity financing in 2007, to finance the acquisition of Inter-Tel, a $460M, 1900 person publicly traded company. In 2007, Steve was appointed Chief Integration Officer with overall responsibility to integrate the acquisition of Inter-Tel into Mitel. In addition Steve has also previously led a cross-border NASDAQ/TSX IPO in 1997. Steve currently oversees the company’s M&A program and has extensive experience in M&A targeting, due diligence, negotiation, valuation, deal structuring and post deal integration.

Steve is a board member and Chair of the Audit Committee for Magor Communications Corporation, and also sits on the boards of key Mitel subsidiaries.

Steve is active in the Ottawa community, particularly supporting health care. He is Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation as well as a member of the executive committee and nominating committee and is a frequent speaker, spokesperson and fundraiser for the Foundation.

Steve has sat on several strategic advisory boards for emerging tech companies and is a former member of the Board of the Canadian Wireless Telecom Association and former Chairman of the CWTA’s Fixed Wireless Committee.

A resident of Ottawa, where he lives with Donna, his wife of 36 years, Steve has three adult children and one grandson. Steve enjoys golf, cycling and wine appreciation.

Steve obtained his CA designation in 1982 and was elected a Fellow Chartered Accountant in 2011and received his FCPA in 2013. He is a graduate of Carleton University (Bachelor of Commerce 1980). He also holds the ICD.D professional director designation (2009) from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
